Our 3-inch insulated mobile home roof is, in my opinion, the very best mobile home roof available. It consists of an embossed (for added strength) aluminum outer skin, laminated to a full, solid, 3-inch thick, panel of closed-cell polystyrene foam. These panels are far stronger and insulate much better than the 1.5-inch thick panels found in their competitor’s roof. The difference becomes increasingly evident as these roofs age. The competitor’s thinner panels are more prone to damage when people walk on the roof and, because they’re so thin, they tend to develop the same dips, buckles and warps (where water tends to pool) found on the original roof (see photo, above). Our insulated roof, which we have been installing for over 25 years, spans such imperfections while remaining totally rigid and flat – even on the very first roofs we installed over 25 years ago.
You’ll appreciate the fact that our roofs require no maintenance. No re-coats, no re-sealing. This roof is backed by a 15-year manufacturers warranty, but could very well outlast any mobile home it is installed on.
The two most beneficial features of our 3-inch insulated roofs are the superior insulation and the 6-inch overhang added to the existing roof.
The benefit of the 3-inch insulated panel is more than the R-13 rated insulation. The R-13 insulation is additional insulation covering any existing insulation. R-13 is actually more insulation than most older mobile home roofs had to begin with. But the fact that this insulation is installed over the existing roof, means that it will keep the sun off of the original roof metal. Strong sunlight heats roof metal to extreme temperatures. At an ambient temperature of 90 degrees, a galvanized metal roof can get too hot to touch for very long. This heat transfers to – and gets trapped in – the space between the roof metal and the ceiling panels. This is why a mobile home remains very hot inside, even after the sun goes down and it’s cool outside. With our insulated roof, even at 100+ degrees, that original metal roof will not get any hotter than the area of your deck shaded by its awning. Your home remains cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter; amounting to considerable savings on your energy bill.
The fact that our 3-inch roof is approved for a 6-inch overhang amounts to official recognition of the strength of the panels themselves. The overhang keeps rain away from the tops of walls: the main source of leaks in a mobile home. The overhang also prevents rain seeping between the awning and the home, causing ugly streaks down the side of the wall. With an overhang, water cannot get between the awning and home. And finally, the overhang adds aesthetic appeal by lending a more “standard house” appearance.
